What these words actually mean
Lo que realmente significan estas palabras
Plain language, both languages. Nobody should lose a right because of vocabulary.
Federal rule
Fall Protection
Protección contra caídas
Gear and systems that stop you hitting the ground — harness, lanyard, anchor point, guardrails, safety nets. In construction the federal trigger is six feet; in general industry it is four.
Site practice
Tie-Off
Amarrarse
Connecting your harness to an anchor point. If there is nothing to tie off to, that is the employer’s problem to solve, not yours to work around.
Site practice
Yo-Yo / SRL
Yoyo / Línea retráctil
A self-retracting lifeline. It pays out as you move and locks if you fall, like a seatbelt.
Federal rule
Confined Space
Espacio confinado
A tank, vessel, boiler, pit, manhole, silo, or trench — anywhere big enough to enter, hard to get out of, and not built for someone to work in. Most confined space deaths are the people who go in after the first person.
Federal rule
Permit-Required Confined Space
Espacio confinado que requiere permiso
A confined space with an added hazard — bad air, something that can bury or crush you, an inward-sloping floor. Entry requires a written permit, an attendant outside, air testing, and a rescue plan.
Federal rule
Attendant
Vigilante
The person who stays outside a confined space the entire time, watching whoever is inside. They never enter to rescue — that is how the second death happens.
Federal rule
Lockout / Tagout (LOTO)
Candado y etiqueta
Shutting off a machine’s power and locking it so nobody can turn it on while you are working inside or on it. Your lock, your key. Nobody else removes it.
Tu candado, tu llave. Nadie más lo quita.
Federal rule
Hot Work
Trabajo en caliente
Welding, cutting, grinding — anything that makes sparks or flame. Usually needs a permit and a fire watch, especially near flammables.

Federal rule
Excavation / Trenching
Excavación / Zanja
Digging. A trench five feet or deeper generally needs a protective system — sloping, shoring, or a trench box. A cubic yard of soil weighs about as much as a car and cave-ins kill in seconds.

Heat Illness
Enfermedad por calor
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke. There is no federal heat standard yet, but employers still have to protect you under the General Duty Clause. Federal rule requires drinking water — it does not say it has to be cold.

Federal rule
Potable Water
Agua potable
Water that is safe to drink. That is all the federal rule requires. Temperature is a site practice, not a federal requirement — though OSHA’s own heat guidance recommends cool water.
Federal rule
Silica Dust

Federal rule
Retaliation
Represalia
Your employer punishing you for reporting a hazard, an injury, or a violation. It is rarely a firing. It looks like write-ups, the worst assignments, cut hours, being first in a layoff, or the phone not ringing for the next job.
Federal rule
Section 11(c)
Sección 11(c)
The part of federal law that makes retaliation illegal. The window to file with OSHA is 30 days from the retaliatory act — short, so documenting the timeline comes first.
Federal rule
General Duty Clause
Cláusula de Deber General
The catch-all. When no specific standard covers a hazard, the employer still has to keep the workplace free of recognized hazards that can kill or seriously hurt you.

Site practice
Stop Work Authority
Autoridad para detener el trabajo
On most industrial sites, stopping unsafe work is not just allowed — it is required. See it, say it. Using the site’s own program is a stronger position than refusing on your own.
Site practice
Life-Saving Rules
Reglas que Salvan Vidas
A short list of rules an employer treats as absolute — energy isolation, confined space, work at height, hot work, line of fire. Breaking one can get you removed from a site the same day.
Site practice
Near Miss

Something that almost hurt someone. Same event as an injury minus the luck. No federal rule requires reporting one, but once the employer knows, that hazard is a recognized hazard.

Federal rule
OSHA 300 Log
Registro OSHA 300
The record of work-related injuries and illnesses an employer must keep. Work-related illnesses go on it too — a skin rash, a chemical exposure, a breathing problem. “Reports are only for injuries” is false.
